Perrone Robotics Demonstrates Integration with Verizon Hyper Precision Location & 5G at Lake Nona

Perrone Robotics in partnership with Verizon demonstrated autonomous vehicle (AV) operations launching from the Lake Nona Innovation Hub in Orlando, Florida at a special event held on September 7th, 2022. The AVs were powered by Perrone Robotics’ TONY AV kit integrated with Verizon’s Hyper Precise Location and 5G services. This game changing integration demonstrated 1-2 centimeter-level positioning during autonomous operations at Lake Nona. Perrone Robotics brought two different zero emission all-electric ADA-compliant transit vans to operate around Lake Nona. The FMVSS-compliant vehicles are capable of operation on public roads and were operating at roadway speeds for the routes selected, up to 35 mph demonstrated. Intersection handling with right and left turns, crosswalk handling, pedestrian and vehicle collision avoidance, vehicle pacing/following, and more are embodied in the TONY AV kit installed in the vehicles. During operations, significant mid-day Florida rainfall was encountered as well with the vehicles in autonomous mode.

Vehicle Platforms. The vehicles demonstrated were two zero emissions all-electric transit vans, the Lightning eMotors Ford Transit Van and Greenpower Motor Company AV Star. Passenger capacity options include 12 to 20 seats. Optional ADA compliant rear or side lifts with ADA compliant wheelchair positions are possible in these vans. The vehicles meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) allowing them to be operated on public roads without any special waivers.

Innovative Technology. Perrone Robotics’ TONY Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Kit were integrated into each vehicle platform bringing Level 4 autonomous operations to the Lake Nona environment. Demonstrated publicly for the first time, were Perrone’s TONY AVs integrated with Verizon’s Hyper Precise Positioning technology combined with Verizon 5G service. Verizon’s Hyper Precise Positioning technology brought 1-2 centimeter-level positioning inside of Perrone’s AVs to the Lake Nona zones of operations.

Operations. In just one day’s time, operators from Perrone Robotics mapped two different routes in and around Lake Nona starting from Verizon’s Lake Nona Innovation Hub. The AV demonstration displayed operation on public roads, at posted roadway speeds up to 35 mph, along high demand routes.
