Industry News on Operating Systems for Driverless Cars
Inside Unmanned Systems recently produced an exclusive cover story on the coming revolution of driverless cars and operating systems for such vehicles. Perrone Robotics’ MAX technology as a targeted solution for this problem was discussed.
Perrone Robotics first deployed an early version of its MAX software platform to drive its fully autonomous driverless vehicles in the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge and 2007 DARPA Urban Challenge. Since then, Perrone Robotics has continued to evolve the platform for fully autonomous driverless vehicles and small unmanned ground vehicles alike. At the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the MAX software platform is used in Perrone Robotic’s Drop-in Autonomy Kit (DAK) which has been dropped into over 25 different vehicles to date (and counting). The DAK enables users to convert existing vehicles into autonomous self-navigating vehicles in 30 minutes or less.
In 2006, Perrone Robotics’ filed patents for a “General Purpose Robotics Operating System” (embodied by MAX), a patent for which was recently granted by the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. Having focused since the early days of driverless vehicles on providing an operating system for such applications, Perrone Robotics has been able to create and evolve a platform rich in breadth that has repeatedly demonstrated itself as an incredibly effective approach for rapidly building fully autonomous vehicles.
